Reading BMI Scientifically: Formula, Ranges and What It Doesn’t Tell You
BMI is the most widespread health screening metric, yet "same BMI, different bodies" leads to frequent misreading. This article covers the formula, standard ranges, and why body-fat percentage and waist circumference matter too.
The formula and standard ranges
BMI = 体重(kg) ÷ 身高(m)²。例如 1.70m、65kg 的人,BMI = 65 ÷ 2.89 ≈ 22.5。世卫组织成人参考区间为:偏瘦 <18.5,正常 18.5–24.9,超重 25–29.9,肥胖 ≥30;部分亚洲标准将超重起点前移到 24、肥胖前移到 28。BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For 1.70 m and 65 kg: 65 ÷ 2.89 ≈ 22.5. WHO adult reference ranges: underweight <18.5, normal 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9, obese ≥30; some Asian standards move overweight to 24 and obesity to 28.
Mind the units: height must be in metres, not centimetres — the most common hand-calculation error. Our BMI calculator avoids unit and squaring mistakes and reports the healthy weight interval directly.
Why the same BMI looks different on different bodies
BMI sees only total weight, not its composition. Muscle is denser than fat, so athletic people can be "overweight" by BMI while lean; sedentary "skinny-fat" people can be normal by BMI yet carry metabolic risk.
Muscle loss in older adults and fluid changes in pregnancy also distort BMI. Hence its role: population-level screening, not individual diagnosis.
Put BMI back into a metric portfolio
A fuller self-assessment combines: BMI for mass, waist circumference for visceral fat (watch ≥90 cm for men, ≥85 cm for women), body-fat percentage for composition, and weight trend for dynamics. Any abnormal reading deserves attention; all-normal readings still don’t excuse neglecting exercise and sleep.
Treat BMI as one needle on the health dashboard — not the only one. That is the scientific way to use it.
